https://www.dvusd.org/cms/lib/AZ0190109 ... heaney.pdf

"And he saw too a standard, entirely of gold,
hanging high over the hoard,
a masterpiece of filigree; it glowed with light
2770 so he could make out the ground at his feet
and inspect the valuables."

https://www.visionhoglandet.se/olanning ... uldaldern/

https://www.academia.edu/15282446/Beowu ... val_Europe

"The dragon’s lair in the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf has been widely interpreted to reflect engagement with Neolithic megalithic architecture. Embodying the poet’s sense of the past, the stone barrow (Old English: stānbeorh) of the dragon has been taken to reveal mythological and legendary attributions to megalithic monuments as the works of giants and haunts of dragons in the early medieval world."

https://www.roman-britain.co.uk/militar ... ary-camps/

"There are traditionally three main types of Roman fortification; the Marching Camp, the Auxiliary Fort and the Legionary fortress. To these three basic types there has been recently added a fourth classification, that of Vexillation Fortress.

There are also smaller fortifications such as Fortlets, Signal Stations, Light Houses and Watch Towers."

"The interior buildings would be the last things constructed, mainly of timber, though sometimes in stone, particularly the sacellum in the centre of the fort, which housed the regimental standards and the treasury; in many Roman forts, the sacellum was the only building made of stone."

Sacellum låter intressant. Hur såg ett sådant ut?

https://castraromana.weebly.com/sacellu ... cipia.html

"The sacellum was directly facing the main gate, and was the most sacred place in the Roman fortress. It was a chapel which housed the legion's standard, the aquila (eagle). This was the image of an eagle with outstretched wings perched on top of a pole. It was made of gold and holds a bundle of darts representing Jupiter's thunderbolts. To lose it in battle was extremely bad luck, and this almost never happened."

"In military contexts the headquarters building
incorporated the regimental shrine (sacellum
or aedes), while urban sites such as Cirencester
have produced Jupiter Columns that would have
stood outside in the street or at another public
location and which appear to have had a public
religious function"

Här Vindolanda i England:

Notera "Sacellum and strong room" i länken ovan.

Gjorde en google sökning med följande sökord:

sacellum rome england

Bland sökresultaten:

"The sunken strongroom (sacellum) in the headquarters building (principia) at the centre of Segontium Roman fort, Caernarfon, Gwynedd, Wales, UK. Built in the C3rdAD, the room was originally vaulted & lay beneath the shrine (aedes) where the military standard & statues of the god Jupiter & the Emperor were kept. It held the garrison's pay chest and other valuables."

https://eaglesanddragonspublishing.com/ ... -fortress/

"The treasury and the sacellum were often located within a covered basilica which was a part of the principia. In here, units could parade and officers could address the troops. This was especially useful in places like Britannia where the weather was often inclement."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica

"In Ancient Roman architecture, a basilica was a large public building with multiple functions that was typically built alongside the town's forum. The basilica was in the Latin West equivalent to a stoa in the Greek East. The building gave its name to the architectural form of the basilica."

Vad skall man leta efter ang placering mm?

https://eaglesanddragonspublishing.com/ ... -fortress/

"One simple formula for a camp is employed, which is adopted at all times in all places. (Polybius)
It would be a mistake to think that every legionary camp or base was exactly the same wherever you went in the Roman Empire. There was in fact a lot of variation due things like the terrain, the size of the force, and the preferences of the commander etc. But, there were certain features that were always the same, as is hinted at in the quote by Polybius above.

The first step would be to pick a suitable site for a fort that was both safe and strategic. A hill top was preferable, as was a site near to a waterway and water supply, as well as the road network if there was already one in place. Communication, hydration, and sanitation were essential!"

Avstånden beskrivs tämligen vagt i Beowulfkvädet.

https://www.dvusd.org/cms/lib/AZ0190109 ... heaney.pdf

"In the end each clan on the outlying coasts
10 beyond the whale-road
had to yield to him
and begin to pay tribute. That was one good king"

"her foamy neck was fleet and buoyant,
1910 a lapped prow loping over currents,
until finally the Geats caught sight of coastline
and familiar cliffs. The keel reared up,
wind lifted it home, it hit on the land
."

"Hostilities broke out when Hrethel died, and the Swedes
Ongentheow's sons were unrelenting,
refusing to make peace, campaigning violently
from coast to coast, constantly setting up
terrible ambushes around Hreasnahill.
My own kith and kin avenged
2480 these evil events, as everybody knows"

"Then over sea-roads
2380 exiles arrived, sons of Ohthere
They had rebelled against the best of all slain
the sea-kings in Sweden"

Närmast ett mer noggrant beskrivet avstånd kommer väl "from coast to coast", enligt ovan.

https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=151&start=3110

https://eaglesanddragonspublishing.com/ ... -fortress/

"The first step would be to pick a suitable site for a fort that was both safe and strategic. A hill top was preferable, as was a site near to a waterway and water supply, as well as the road network if there was already one in place. Communication, hydration, and sanitation were essential!"

I mitten N-S orienterad grop, l 5m, bredd 2m, djup 1-1,2m.
